Michael Phelps

Throughout the years there have been many important people that you recognize from the Olympics but none quite like Michael Phelps. He is 24 years old, 6'4" and has already won 16 Olympic Medals, 14 of which are Gold in the Olympics for swimming. Eight of those gold medals he won in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Michael Phelps has become a world icon and a very important artifact for the Olympics. He had his face plastered on every magazine cover and sponsors knocking down his door. I have always watched the olympics but I never really could quite remember a single important person I associated with the olympics. Since the recent olympics I know that I will always know who Michael Phelps is and will always associate him with the Olympics. I may forget what year or where it took place but I will always know that he was part of the Olympics in some way.

  1. I enjoyed watching Phelps as well. With the recent drug photos hitting the press, I wonder how this has changed his image among others? When the pictures first came out, it was such a big deal. It seems as if this was excused rather quickly compared to others who have been in a similar situation. What do you think?

  2. I don't think it was totally excused. He lost a few of his sponsors like Kelloggs. I also believe they may not let him compete in the next olympics because if you are an olympic athlete and you get caught doing drugs it's an automatic suspension for 4 years. I wouldn't be surprised if they let him swim, however, because we are a very competitive country. I do not believe it is right and believe if those are the rules he should have to abide by them as everyone else. To me he is still an amazing athlete that changed the way I look at the olympics.

  3. Why do you think he turned to the drugs in the first place? Could it be because of the pressure to try and win so many medals at the Olympics or do you think it was just because he thought it was "cool" and was supposed to "give him a good time"?
